Who killed Brian Jones? Thorogood?

March 7th, 2010

Zane and I had a back and forth the other day about the death of Brian Jones. As far as I knew, Brian Jones died due to reckless drug experimentation. I wiki’d it — turned out he drowned in his pool.

Authorities ruled the death an accident. However, there was a theory that a builder named Frank Thorogood (no relation to George Thorogood) may have killed Brian Jones. I think Frank Thorogood was doing some construction work on Mr. Jones’ home at the time.

Frank Thorogood died in 1994. Was he bad to the bone?

40 years after the death, British authorities have reopened the case.

Anyway, Zane mentioned that he is a big fan of early Rolling Stones music because of the apocalyptic feel of songs like Gimme Shelter (“It’s just a shot away, it’s just a shot away!”). According to Wikipedia, Mick Jagger said Gimme Shelter and other songs from the Let It Bleed album are “end-of-the-world … apocalypse” type of songs.

Now, the Brian Jones Wikipedia entry made it sound like Brian Jones had zero impact on the Let It Bleed album. They describe him as a guy who just wanted to do blues covers. I, Tony Vahl, have no idea how true any of that is. Apparently, he was out of the band by 1969, since he was unproductive and difficult.

Of course, Brian Jones was also credited in the Wiki entry for his use of different instruments like the Sitar. He was well-remembered after his death, with artists like Jim Morrison dedicating poetry to him, and the Rolling Stones dedicating the show following his death to him. Bob Dylan bought his casket.

I guess there was a movie in 2005 named Stoned that deals with the last days of Brian Jones and how he may have died. It’s free on Netflix, so I’ll have to check it out, after I’ve watched Boondock Saints II.

world = Titanic

March 5th, 2010

The following are txt msgs between Zane Black and Tony Vahl:

Zane: The world is f***ed up

Vahl: I wish I could start a band called Titanic, with a stage set that looks like musicians playing music on the deck as the ship sinks.
I could use your prophetic statements as lyrics — total techno-rock darkness, with the Titanic in the background, kissing a liberal iceberg

Zane: That’s why I’m the pied piper to doomsday!
I am the fiddle player on Titanic, playing last notes.

Vahl: I’m shuffling the deck chairs after the microphone shorts out and my guitar string break.

Zane: I’m down to playing evil chopsticks.

Vahl: I’m whistling. LOL

Zaneyland Podcast: Robinson XCR, Bushmaster ACR, Selma Hayek, Rose McGowan

January 23rd, 2010

On today’s episode of Zane Black’s Zaneyland, the King of Orlando discusses:
- how great the Robinson XCR is
- how lame it is that the Bushmaster ACR is selling for 2x what it was supposed to retail for
- Zane Black’s support for Robinson’s lawsuit against other gun manufacturers for patent infringement
- A comparison between the all-metal XCR and the Nerf Gun feel of the ACR
- The Hitler Spoof video that makes total fun of Bushmaster and their corporate masters Cerebus (First they screw up Chrysler, now this — What, they needed more money for their house on the Hamptons?)
- Homage to Selma Hayek’s performance in From Dusk Till Dawn and Rose McGowan’s performance in Planet Terror

Hitler Parody, Bushmaster ACR, Robinson XCR

January 22nd, 2010

I spoke with Zane Black today and he filled me in on the latest controversy in the world of guns. Apparently the Bushmaster ACR, a widely anticipated weapon which was supposed to ship at a price of $1,400, is being released at a price of $3,000 or so.

That’s, like, double the price!

Rifle enthusiasts are up in arms, to the point where someone made this hilarious spoof video where they took a clip from the Hitler movie “Downfall” to vent their frustrations over the cost of the Bushmaster ACR:

Zane and I plan on doing a Zaneyland Podcast in the near future on this topic, where we compare this expensive plastic rifle to the all metal Robinson XCR.

I don’t know much about guns, but Zane is an expert in the field … so I look forward to talking to him about this important topic!
